I had high hopes for this book, but after finished 3 domains I'm at my wits end on how just completely unnecessary the book chooses to write sentences as well as using over the top vocabulary. It's just not needed. Studying for the CISSP using this book is fighting a two-front war. You're trying to understand the material WHILE trying to decipher the damn sentences as well.

This book WILL slow your studying down. I wish I never spent the $60.

Vocabulary example: "Overwrought process and bureaucracy are a pernicious drain on the viability and quality of a software project."

Headache example: "Relating data among tables in this fashion also reduces data duplication because the relation allows for each of the data elements represented in tables throughout the schema to be associated and meaningfully referenced with other data without necessarily having to duplicate the data to make these connections."

I was an English major in college, went on to law school, and devoured books on clear writing. I hope that my Reviews show a bit of evidence that those efforts were not in vain.

I returned time after time to Fowler and for legal matters the Harvard Blue Book.

Dreyer's book belongs in that pantheon. Consider his essay on "unique". As a stamp collector, I've cringed time after time when one of my fellow collectors used and overused that word to describe one of their treasures in their exhibits.

Here is Dreyer's take:

VERY UNIQUE In the 1906 edition of The King’s English, H. W. Fowler declared—and he was neither the first nor the last person to so declare—“A thing is unique, or not unique; there are no degrees of uniqueness; nothing is ever somewhat or rather unique, though many things are almost or in some respects unique.”

I will allow that something can be virtually unique, though many things are almost or in some respects unique.”

• For those who do editing, this book offers useful guidance, covering topics in a clever, snarky way. I finally know when to capitalize (or not capitalize) an entry after a colon Use a capital if the entry is a complete sentence; otherwise, not (e.g., lists). And curious items on the use of B.C. and A.D.; or when or when not to write out numbers.
  
  Oddly, the text is often clunky or irritating because the author too often tries to be amusing. I'm on chapter 7 and have already found some copy-editing errors (odd, since the author claims to be so attentive, and his list of thanks at the end of the book goes on for 8 pages--with this many interested parties, one would think someone would have spotted the blunders). The most annoying feature of the book relates to the footnotes First, there are many too many and their font size is much too small; second, many of the footnotes are smart aleck and unnecessary; third, the symbols for the footnotes are tiny, tiny asterisks, crossbars, and double crossbars that are difficult to see as one is reading, with the result that, getting to the bottom of a page, one realizes there are yet more notes not read because the reader hasn't seen the minuscule symbol to which the note refers. Highly annoying and out of sync with the author's emphasis on verbal clarity and visual appropriateness.
  
  Just read chapter 7, "The Realities of Fiction," and am becoming irritated If we trust what's said here, most writers are oblivious and dumb. Odd that a copy editor is making such claims. One begins to realize why most copy editors never make it as writers. If you want a better recent book on writing and editing, I recommend Mary Norris's BETWEEN YOU AND ME (Norton, 2015)--clearer, more graceful, and more enticing.
• Others have noted that this book is useful and entertaining. So it is. I might have given it five stars if I owned it in paper, but I don't. I have the version, in which the footnotes are maddening. You can't easily get to them one by one and collectively they just read like extensions of each section's text. Their content should have been incorporated into the chapters. I don't see a reason for single footnote in the whole frustrating thing. What were they thinking? Dunno.

"Having been to Guatemala several times I wondered if there would be much new information in Deborah Chandler’s most recent book, A Textile Travelers Guide to Guatemala. What a revelation! One should never underestimate Deborah or Thrums Books, who consistently put out beautiful, thoughtful, informative books.

The focus of this book is on discovering and understanding the beautiful Maya textiles of Guatemala. Whether you are planning your first trip or have been there 10 times, if you love textiles, this book has something for you.

The book is divided into: An Introduction to travel in Guatemala, including things travelers may need to know before they go. Then six chapters covering the major regions important to textile tourists. And finally, “Off the Beaten Path”-- a quick overview of eleven less frequently visited regions where one can also find interesting textiles. Each major chapter includes information about local Mayan languages, market days, saints’ days and major holidays celebrated in the region, as well as transportation options and important landmarks. There are recommendations for artisans one can visit, weaving teachers, tour guides and other insider tips for readers interested in the local textiles. There are descriptions of weaving techniques and looms used in various regions (although, for even more detailed information see the author’s last book Traditional Weavers of Guatemala.) Finally, a textile glossary helps clarify words that may be translated differently in Guatemala than in standard language dictionaries. This comprehensive information is invaluable and hard to find, especially all in one book!

Thrums Books are always filled with eye candy: gorgeous photos of gorgeous people, places and textiles and this book does not disappoint. For this reader, photos of people’s faces will always be the most compelling, but who can resist the volcanoes, festivals, old colonial buildings and, of course, the carefully explained photos of (traditional) textiles.

And yet, what I appreciate most about this book is the even-handed context setting. It does not pretend to compete with well-known guidebooks full of hotels and restaurants, although each section includes a few of each. Rather this is primarily a book that explains how different textiles are constructed, and where to find specific things in the rapidly changing textile scene in Guatemala. The author also takes on the hard stuff: the effects of colonial history on Guatemalan culture today; the effects of global markets and cheaper imports on locally handwoven clothing; poverty and relationships between buyers and sellers; cultural appropriation of both actual textiles and traditional symbols that are then “repurposed” for first world tastes.

I had been to Guatemala recently, but my reaction to this book was an urge to take notes and start planning my next trip. It is a compelling guide to a beautiful country that has an astounding variety of weaving and embroidery."

• I was thrilled to get this book just before we left on a month long trip to Guatemala. I'm a weaver and I was anxious to learn as much as I could about Guatemalan textiles on my trip. This book added to my textile knowledge as well as gave me much information about the history, indigenous cultures and languages of Guatemala. We were lucky to find an excellent guide in Antigua who was very knowledgeable about his country's history, culture and textiles in particular. He was thrilled when I gave him my copy of this book. If only there were a postal system in Guatemala- I'm sure he'd want to order more copies of this book to share with his clients. Even if you're not interested in textiles you'll enjoy this book using it will make any trip to Guatemala more interesting.

There are descriptions of weaving techniques and looms used in various regions (although, for even more detailed information see the author’s last book Traditional Weavers of Guatemala.) Finally, a textile glossary helps clarify words that may be translated differently in Guatemala than in standard language dictionaries. This comprehensive information is invaluable and hard to find, especially all in one book!
  
  Thrums Books are always filled with eye candy gorgeous photos of gorgeous people, places and textiles and this book does not disappoint. For this reader, photos of people’s faces will always be the most compelling, but who can resist the volcanoes, festivals, old colonial buildings and, of course, the carefully explained photos of (traditional) textiles.
  
  And yet, what I appreciate most about this book is the even-handed context setting. It does not pretend to compete with well-known guidebooks full of hotels and restaurants, although each section includes a few of each. Rather this is primarily a book that explains how different textiles are constructed, and where to find specific things in the rapidly changing textile scene in Guatemala. The author also takes on the hard stuff the effects of colonial history on Guatemalan culture today; the effects of global markets and cheaper imports on locally handwoven clothing; poverty and relationships between buyers and sellers; cultural appropriation of both actual textiles and traditional symbols that are then “repurposed” for first world tastes.
  
  I had been to Guatemala recently, but my reaction to this book was an urge to take notes and start planning my next trip. It is a compelling guide to a beautiful country that has an astounding variety of weaving and embroidery.

• I'm currently a 1L law student and have used this pocket dictionary a ton since I first got it.
  
  As a student I have access to the online edition through Nexis but I've actually found this to be easier since the search tool is not always as good as you would expect and just getting to the online version can take longer than opening up this book most of the time.
  
  I also am more of a kinetic learner and have found that the print edition helps me to retain better. Plus I just love books so it's more enjoyable to me to look it up in a book than online (and in law school every small pleasure helps).
  
  Definitely recommend it. I've found it useful and more importantly more enjoyable than an online version.
  
  UPDATE I'm now a 3L and it's true that you don't use this dictionary as much you would expect to, especially after 1L. But I do still pull it out every so often, and seeing definitions in print form helps me to remember them.
  
  I will say though that part of me wishes I had gone with the full sized version instead of the pocket edition. It is frustrating in some upper level classes, like Property, when you go to look for a word and it isn't there.
  
  If you are concerned about the weight you carry, you will find that you will get better at carrying only what you need (or just get used to tugging around a ton of books all the time). So the pocket edition is not essential.
  
  Overall, I don't regret buying it as it's been helpful enough to warrant the 35 bucks you will spend on it. Plus Black's is the best law dictionary out there. But, if you are short on money and are trying to decide between the pocket edition and the full edition go with the full edition.
• When compared to the newest, 9th edition, this 5th edition puts that one to shame! And, rightfully so! For example
  
  I could NOT believe the definitions in 9th edition book! They are supposed to be 'legal' definitions! Definitions of words when they are used in laws and Courts, not as defined in Websters which is everyday use.
  
  Fence, for example in the 5th edition is
  
  A hedge, structure, or partition, erected for the purpose of inclosing a piece of land, or to divide a piece of land ito distinct portions, or to separate two contiguous estates. (and more)
  
  In the 9th edition, it does NOT mention the definition shown above, but goes on ad nauseum to define how drugs and stolen goods can be sold to a fence. Not one mention of the "fence" as it pertains to real property. NOT ONE WORD!!!
  
  However, the new Editor's name, in gilded letters, LARGE gilded letters, is on the leather bound cover Bryan A. Garner, Editor in Chief.
  
  Don't waste your money on the 9th or 8th edition.
• First of all the plastic in cover is peaking and when I finally went to use for class I note the pages aren’t in chronological order nor are the definitions defeating the purpose of a DICTIONARY! Now I have to repurchase at a bookstore or more reputable book seller 😔
• I sought out this product because it is the last edition before the NWO began changing the dictionary. If you don't believe it, compare the definitions for the USA. The USA or US now ceases to exist legally. Now I must get a ninth edition for the new words that have since been created.
  This particular book is nicely padded, has a gorgeous cover, and in near perfect shape except for the damage described by seller. Seller nicely wrapped the product for shipping and it arrived within the shipping parameters. I would buy from this seller again since he gave an accurate description and knows how to wrap an item for shipping.
• Extremely helpful when reading through depositions and motions. Already dog-eared after a couple weeks. Should have spring for the hard cover edition.
• Content is 5 stars, size is 4. This dictionary is most definitely not a pocket size dictionary; it is larger than expected.
• Worth its weight in GOLD, especially if you need legal info on what legalese means. I have difference versions. This is best one with most content that I have

• A lot of words, and light weight. Only suggestion come with tabs to separate the letters. A lot of looking where a word is, but once I put on my own tabs, great book.

Warning Mpreg elements! (Though the MCs in this book aren't and cannot get pregnant, this is a spin-off series from my Chosen series. Occasional Mpreg characters might have cameos. You've been warned!)

Also, my books have little to no angst, and lots and lots of fluff! They are better read in order, because I kind of write them like a continuation of a story, and I don't like to repeat explanations over and over if I can help it. No cheating, because that makes my heart hurt, and I try to avoid things that make me sad like I SHOULD be avoiding carbs. Sorry, I just don't want anyone being disappointed if they like the angst filled heart-rippers. These read more like a romantic comedy than a romantic drama.

• This whole series is impressively magical as well as enchanting. I was curious about Cagney's relationship with his sister since they play so ruthlessly with each other, wow. However, I was happy to see that Briec has an admirer, which I hope progresses throughout each addition of the series. Cagney and Guthrie (ghostly) were so cute together, and witty, especially when one of them was invisible throughout the beginning of the story. The characters were well conveyed, the romance was charming, and the plot held my attention. Excited to read the next book in this series (and the, Chosen,). =)
• Kissing the invisible man. Absolutely priceless. I cannot wait to see what happens with Seeley though. A troll... always an interesting love interest. I did feel like there was a small hole with a slightly vindictive brother left out there in the face realm.
• This story was sweet and cute of course we find out a little more about Gunthrie . We also come a bit closer as to finding out who's responsible for the drugs. They introduced a new character in this book and look forward to them having a story .
• I always love theses fluffy books from J. D. Light. They make me happy and this one was no different. It was cute and light with minimal angst. I can't wait for the next one.
• I love that this group of friends just keeps growing! The steamy scenes are awesome. It's no small torture waiting for the next book.
• Carney finally gets his mischievous ghost. Ruling Carney is a quick light read for those days you need a break from all the drama.
• This one was really cute. I liked the idea of Guthrie being invisible and pulling little pranks on Cagney. And man I hope Laramy and Briec get a book lol
• Ok read.

• Love this book. Mandalas are printed on one side only. Great for markers or any medium you like.
• This is the first mandala coloring book that I purchased. Most of these mandalas are fairly easy to color. It's a good book for adults beginning to color mandalas. I also,like the paper and ink quality.
• I was pleased to receive this Mandalas coloring book. I've been wanting to try out a Mandalas book for some time, and I was very thrilled with book.
  
  What I like about this book is the pictures are only printed on one side of each page. The designs are nicely printed and not too small like in some adult coloring books. This book would be great with any medium you prefer.
  
  I definitely recommend this book and the author to anyone that likes Mandalas.
• I was extremely disappointed in this coloring book. I like fine detail work & these mandalas are all large areas to color. If you like that type of coloring then the book would be great for you. I love the Stress less paisley book I have! Just wish this one had fine detail work like the paisley one. I returned this book
• I only gave 4 stars because this book has mainly basic designs, nothing truly challenging. However, there are times when I want something more simple to color, so I am perfectly happy to have this book for those times. The designs are one to a page, which is a definite improvement over some other books that cram too many designs onto too few pages. Also, the design elements are not so small that I can't even see to color, another complaint I have with other books. So as a whole I would say I am quite happy with this book.
• I'm into the craze. Sometimes I like to put a lot of thought into how I color. Other times I just want to relax. This book is great for that. Pick a page. Pick 3 - 5 colors and start coloring. As the patterns are repetitive, you repeat a color in the same part of the pattern. No heavy thinking and planning. As long as your choice of colors work together, you get a beautiful picture.
• These pages contain pictures to color that are not only "Stress Free", as advertised, they are also immensely "Stress Reducing". This was the second book of Mandalas I have purchased. The first one was fairly simple and a good starting point. This book is a bit more difficult. And, while it's tougher to color in terms of more complicated designs, some smaller areas to color and a good deal more areas to color, the "authors"/designers have created mandalas that seem to be easy to pick out color schemes that are both lovely and cohesive, when finished. I'm honestly an engineer, NOT artistically inclined at all Yet I've created some really gorgeous pictures that a couple people have asked to frame.
  
  I will also point out that I watch a lot of television. I've taken to coloring while watching. I usually watch programs after recording so I can fast forward through commercials. Since I've taken up coloring, especially in this book, I will simply let the commercials play, as I color through them, not wanting to stop and fast forward through the advertisements.
  
  When I've finished this book, I plan to find another 'coloring book' by the designer/author. I've bought other books that claim to be "stress free" and turned out to have such small spaces as to be "un-colorable" or designs that are basically black and white completed drawings that simply call for a watercolor wash to complete them. Those collections I find are "stress inducing". This book is (almost) totally stress-free! I highly recommend it.
• This is really good for me as a starter coloring book because the patterns are not as intricate as some of the others I have seen. My eyesight requires me to wear reading glasses and these designs suit my vision needs. The only thing I wish this book had is pages that can be removed with perforated edges. Other than that, I love it! Thank you for offering it.
