- I'm a fan of the Moon Handbooks, and this one on Tennessee is a terrific resource to travel with. There are interesting facts on key areas to visit, from the big cities, like Nashville and Memphis, to the smaller towns, like Arrington and Watertown. Moon Tenneessee is also well written and thorough and packs a lot of information into it. There are good tips provided, and it's a great resource to find a place to eat or sleep. The photographs are beautiful, and the maps are helpful too.
- Think quickly and Tennessee might not seem like an obvious tourist destination, right? Then slow down and consider this More than 10 million people visit Memphis per year, alone.
There are so many tourist attractions in Tennessee that it's almost mind blowing. Let's think of just a few. Beale Street and Sun Records in Memphis. The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. The Great Smoky Mountains. Bristol Motor Speedway. Jack Daniels Distillery. UT football. From music to food to sports to geography to history, there's something for everyone.
With so many touristy things to do, there's no reason for an "off the beaten track" guide. This one is built around Tennessee's major tourist sites, and for good reason. These are the places you will want to visit. Very much "on the beaten track" is the way you want to go in Tennessee, even if you consider yourself a hipster.
Like all Moon guides, this one is arranged into chapters by geographic area. Listings are good and up to date, but are very selective. The sites included in the catalog are an excellent sample of Tennessee's best, but are not entirely comprehensive. There is a nice blend of indoor and outdoor attractions. Since there's so much to cover, there is definitely an emphasis on breadth rather than depth. Many attractions and listings get a brief mention, but few get the headline treatment.
Fans of Moon guides know that these books are loaded with cultural and historical contexts to enhance the quality of your experience. There are many sidebars within the text which feature important cultural topics.
I rated this guide at 4 rather than 5 because I think the author hasn't included enough of the state's historic sights. Sure, the major ones, such as Shiloh Battlefield, are here, but the more subtle sites such as the incredible number of intact antebellum plantations in central Tennessee are essentially ignored. Not a big deal, unless this is your primary interest. - The Moon series of guidebooks are inconsistent in quality of advice. I have the GA one and find it very useful, so bought this one for a vivist to the GSM region in TN. The section on the park was quire good, but the author obviously has a dislike for any touristy things, so the sections on Gatlinberg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville were very light, and appeared quite condescending to families who enjoy funfair-type activities.
- I gave this as a gift but looked through it first. It was very interesting and I have lived in TN my whole life.
- I still have not gone back to Tennessee, but the book was very informative and was worth the purchase. Price was good, book is as described, delivered as described. Probably will travel there for a month this winter.
- Getting ready to head out. Needed some information on where to go.
- The Moon group puts out some really nice travel guides. Great tips, hints and overall information for your destination. Make sure to always get the news editions, since things can and will change over time....Love it
- Great book that helped plan a vacation!
